Top Contenders to Replace VMware

In November 2023, Broadcom announced its acquisition of VMware, raising concerns from stakeholders and customers. Past acquisitions by Broadcom, have seen cuts in research and development spending and a shift in focus toward maximizing profitability rather than innovation. Such cuts have historically led to slower product evolution, flexibility, and degraded support, which VMware customers fear will happen again. In addition, Broadcom tends to focus on larger customers leaving smaller organizations without the level of support they are used to having with VMware.

Tego has diligently researched replacement options for organizations looking to replace their existing VMware solution. Depending on the environment, Tego recommends one of two solutions as a replacement:

Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization (OSV)
Red Hat OSV presents a strong case for organizations looking to modernize their infrastructure and move towards a more agile, cloud-native approach while replacing or complementing their existing VMware environments.

With enterprise-grade support from Red Hat, OSV unlocks workload mobility from on-prem to the cloud and between clouds. It provides a single pane of glass for managing both VMs and containers, simplifying operations and reducing the complexity of managing multiple platforms. It is also built on Kubernetes, offering seamless integration with containerized applications. It is designed for hybrid and multi-cloud environments, providing the flexibility to seamlessly deploy and manage applications across on-premises infrastructure and various cloud providers. OSV also has robust security features such as built-in authentication, role-based access control (RBAC), and compliance with industry standards.

Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV)

The Nutanix AHV solution is a good option for organizations if hyper-converged infrastructure is the preferred architecture. While it is an easier application to manage, it is more expensive than the Red Hat OSV solution. It is part of the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud platform, offering an HCI solution that integrates compute, storage, and virtualization, reducing complexity and simplifying management.

AHV is optimized for performance with Nutanix’s software-defined storage, ensuring efficient resource utilization and high application performance. It leverages data locality and other optimizations to reduce latency and improve I/O performance. Like the OSV offering, it provides a single pane of glass for managing the entire infrastructure. It offers an intuitive and user-friendly interface, making managing and monitoring VMs, storage, and network resources easier. AHV is a scalable solution enabling organizations to start small and grow their infrastructure as needed. It supports linear scaling, ensuring consistent performance as new nodes are added. In addition, it offers native backup and disaster recovery solutions so you can quickly recover in the event of a cyberattack.

The Tego Approach

Our Professional Services team has experts to support both solutions. We can assist with implementation, migration, and fully managed service options as part of the OSV solution and by supporting multi-cloud environments and providing guidance on managing the environment moving forward for the AHV solution. With our expertise, we can help you simplify the process of replacing your existing VMware solution.
