Save the Data: An Eye-Opening Exercise on Incident Response

Last week, Tego and Rubrik co-hosted Save the Data, a one-of-a-kind event that gave attendees a unique opportunity to understand how to recover from a ransomware attack. During the event, Rubrik presented a simulated ransomware attack while attendees played the role of someone in the C-suite tasked with recovering from the incident.

“There are a few situations in life that are difficult to explain if you’ve never been through them and a cyber incident is a good example of that,” said Brian Williams, Sales Engineer at Rubrik, who conducted the simulated ransomware attack exercise with attendees. “There are a lot of lessons learned and changes teams make after the fact, so I feel very strongly that attending a Save The Data event can offer that experience without having to actually live through the nightmare first.”

After the simulation, Greg Manson, Vice President of Tego Advisory Services, stressed the importance of organizations thoroughly testing their Disaster Recovery (DR) and Incident Response (IR) plans. He then provided a high-level overview, explaining that the testing is grounded in probable attack scenarios identified through the use of the MITRE ATT&CK framework. Tego employs this framework to pinpoint test scenarios as an integral component of their tabletop testing service.

Testing these plans is essential to ensuring your organization can quickly recover from an attack or breach and is a good exercise to determine what strengths and weaknesses exist in your plans before an incident occurs.  “Even with well-written plans in place, it is essential to conduct thorough testing to uncover the inevitable gaps within the plans.  Testing ensures a more robust and resilient response to potential threats.” said Greg Manson.

It’s easy to understand how rapidly ransomware can escalate. In the current security environment, most people have backup systems in place, but they may not be fully prepared for cyber criminals who infiltrate their network defenses. Rubrik operates under the assumption that a security breach has already occurred, and as a result, it provides data security at the data level. By implementing Rubrik’s services, your organization can prevent a similar catastrophe by:

  • Safeguarding your data with backups that are air-gapped, immutable, and access-controlled.
  • Continuously monitoring your data for signs of ransomware, sensitive data, and compromise indicators.
  • Swiftly and precisely recovering your data while preventing further infection.

“What I love most about partnering with Tego on the Save The Data events, is that I’ve literally sat across the table from Greg’s team during actual cyber incidents,” said Williams. “As with anything, knowledge and wisdom are only gained by experience, and I think Save The Data offers everyone a chance to learn more about themselves and their organizations, through the lens of a mock cyber incident.”

This event was a wonderful opportunity for organizations to learn more about Rubrik and Tego. Contact us today to determine if you would like to learn more about our services.
